To begin, let me tell you of two young men, Marcello and Rodolfo. Bohemians both, they lived carefree lives in a garret above a pachinko parlor in Tokyo. You can see Rodolfo holding Marcello on his shoulders, while Marcello paints the camera lens with the darkest blue.
Marcello was the painter. He was always sketching.
He never left the garret without a pen and a sketch pad.
Back in his garret, he would sketch through the night about all that he had seen.
He loved cats. He sketched cats.
He painted cats. And whenever he could, he asked the beautiful young Mimi to sit for him.
Mimi inspired him. It was while painting her, that he completed his masterpiece.
Rodolfo was a musician.
Always on the prowl, he darted through the streets.
He met fascinating people.
He grabbed a bite whenever he could.
Sometimes he found Marcello, looking for inspiration for his paintings.
When the two of them needed to eat, Rodolfo found work guarding merchandise.
Occasionally, he helped guard banks.
Back at the garret one day, Mimi stopped her modelling to fix a pot of coffee.
Rodolfo heard her screams from the kitchen. He and Marcello ran to rescue her from the boiling pot of coffee.
After Marcello had gone back to paint, Rodolfo kept her hand in his. Mimi kept his hand in hers.
Rodolfo invited Mimi to a picnic.
Mimi brought him a package. It’s a present for you, she explained.
It was a gorgeous gold watch. For you, Mimi said again. I sold my hair to buy it for you.
That night, as Rodolfo was returning from his nightwatchman’s job, he heard a cough.
It was Mimi. She was coughing.
Mimi. Are you ill? It’s nothing, she explained. She coughed again. Really, it’s nothing.
Back at the garret, Mimi taught Rodolfo to tell time. But still she coughed.
Your hands are so cold, Rodolfo said.
Mimi held back her tears. But she could not stop her coughs.
Rodolfo ran to find a store that would sell him a muffler to keep Mimi’s hands warm. He ran and ran. And then he climbed the hill back to the garret.
He walked in the door. Mimi lay on a blanket. Marcello was quiet.
Why are you so quiet, Rodolfo asked Marcello. Why? Why? He ran to Mimi. He held her hand. It was cold. He wrapped her hand in the muffler.

Between her coughs, Mimi thanked him for the muffler. Rodolfo heard Marcello saying a prayer.
