On the night of Hallowe’en, the little red cat, Meow, waited in the living room until the clock struck nine. Then she walked softly to the window. Her master, old Captain Tinker, opened the window, and Meow jumped lightly from the window and went to the meeting of the Cat & Hedgie Club.
Tonight, Madame Ichigo, the beautiful bunny rabbit, was supposed to entertain the club with a Hallowe’en concert on her piano. The club members saw Ichigo on her window sill, waiting for her mistress to open the window.
Suddenly there was a squeak — and then a thud.
Meow and her friends dashed to the foot of the house. In the pile of autumn leaves lay the red bunny. “Are you hurt, Ichigo?” asked Meow.
“I don’t think so,” she answered bravely.
But the friends ran to the door of the house, and cried in chorus. Ichigo’s mistress came out of the house, picked her up and carried her gently away.
But Ichigo’s piano had also fallen out.
Suddenly Meow cried, “I’ve found it!”
Mr. President, in a solemn voice, announced, “The piano has been found. We must deliver it to Madame Ichigo as soon as we can, to comfort her.”
But who would carry the piano to her? There were bears along the way. Meow shivered. “Oh dear! I hope they don’t choose me. I’m so afraid of bears. I’m speedy, but I’m not that big and brave.”
Deep in her heart Meow knew that it was now her turn to help a friend in trouble. But visions of the bears began to haunt her.
“Tonight is Hallowe’en,” she remembered. “I mustn’t be a coward when it’s Hallowe’en. I mustn’t. I mustn’t.” To her own surprise, she raised her voice and said, “Mr. President, I volunteer.”
Shrieks of admiration swept through the club, for everyone knew that Meow was afraid of bears. Meow strapped the piano to her back with her ribbon.
The club members whispered, “good luck.” Meow started down the street toward Ichigo’s house. She was almost there when a growl tore through the night. The growl was answered by another. Meow ran as fast as her little legs would carry her. But she was blocked.
“Why were you running down our street?” demanded the big bear.
Meow answered in a trembling voice, “A witch was chasing me.” Her heart almost stopped beating during the silence that followed.
“We can’t see any witch,” muttered the bears.
“But,” said Meow in a mysterious voice, “maybe if you close your eyes and growl three times at the moon…” The bears closed their eyes and growled three times. When they opened their eyes they still could not see a witch. But Meow had vanished!
Meow squeezed through the hole in Madame Ichigo’s house and climbed the stairs. The beautiful bunny was alone, lying in her bed. “Here is your piano,” whispered Meow. “We thought you might need it.”
“Oh, Meow!” exclaimed Ichigo. “Why did you run such a risk? Did you do it just to help a friend?”
“Yes,” answered Meow, shyly.
